AFF Skydiving Course
How to Get a Skydiving License
Our AFF program breaks the learning journey into clear, achievable steps so you can responsibly build skills with confidence. From training tandems to solo jumps, each stage prepares you to earn your USPA A License.
Repeat jumps are required if learning objectives aren’t met during any curricular stage.
Step 1: Training Tandems (Cat A & B)
Two training tandems build a strong foundation in freefall skills and canopy control. These jumps introduce the core techniques you’ll rely on throughout the AFF skydiving course.
Learning objectives:
- Freefall body position
- Hand signals
- Altitude awareness
- Parachute deployment basics
- Wind direction and landing patterns
- Safe separation from other jumpers
AFF Skydive Category: A & B
Step 2: First Jump Course
Ground school is a 4-6 hour classroom session that instills the core skills needed to exit the airplane, fly your body, deploy your parachute, and navigate a safe landing pattern.
Learning objectives:
- Solo equipment orientation
- Airplane safety
- Freefall body position
- Malfunctions
- Landing
- Emergency procedures
Step 3: AFF Jumps
Two USPA AFF instructors accompany your first solo jumps, holding your harness for stability and evaluation. Then you jump with one to build the skills needed to fly on your own.
Learning objectives:
- Maintain a stable, controlled body position
- Demonstrate consistent altitude awareness
- Execute heading control and basic maneuvers
- Deploy your parachute at the correct altitude
- Navigating an accurate canopy flight pattern
- Land your canopy safely and consistently
AFF Skydive Category: C1-E2
Step 4: Coach Jumps
Next you’ll jump with support from a USPA-certified Coach who will help you learn how to fly with other skydivers. Video debriefs included with each jump.
Learning objectives:
- Improve forward, backward, and side-to-side movement
- Begin docking and controlled approaches
- Practice levels, fall-rate changes, and stability recovery
- Strengthen altitude awareness in group settings
- Learn breakoff procedures and safe separation
- Demonstrate canopy control and consistent landings
AFF Skydive Category: F-H
Step 5: Solo Jumps
With demonstrated stability, awareness, and canopy skills, you’ll transition to true solo skydives. Solidify your independence, sharpen your flying skills, and prepare you for your check dive.
Learning objectives:
- Plan and execute your own skydive
- Practice advanced movement skills
- Refine canopy accuracy and landing patterns
- Maintain consistent altitude awareness
- Build confidence flying in the student holding area
